Ocean Park’s Conservation Programme for First-Class Protected Species (Category I) Achieves Remarkable Success with New Hong Kong-Born Golden Snub-Nosed Monkey

2025-01-20

Ocean Park welcomes the birth of a Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey baby, born in the Park at 9:51 pm on 16 January 2025. This is the fourth golden snub-nosed monkey offspring born in Hong Kong to mother Le Le and father Qi Qi.

Paulo Pong, Chairman of Ocean Park Corporation, said, “Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys are listed as ‘endangered’ on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The successful breeding of another baby at Ocean Park underscores the success of our team’s long-standing effort to conserve and breed animal species with high conservation and educational values. Along with the giant panda twin cubs’ official debut slated for February 2025, we will have three adorable national treasure baby animal ambassadors awaiting visitors to Ocean Park. We hope this will further enhance public awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems for the survival of precious species.”

Le Le and her baby are both in good health, but the baby’s gender and weight are yet to be determined. The golden monkey habitat is temporarily closed to allow time for nursing the newborn golden monkey baby and the animal caretaker team to carry out postnatal care for the baby and mother. The Park will implement crowd control measures at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Sichuan Treasures.

Ocean Park celebrated the births of three Hong Kong-born male Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys – Loki, Little Peanut and Yellow Bean – in 2017, 2019 and 2021, respectively. They now reside at the Chengdu Zoo, where they will join the conservation programme to help preserve the species' genetic diversity.

Ocean Park expresses its gratitude to the Sichuan Forestry and Grassland Bureau (SFGB) for their support over the years, making it possible for Ocean Park to bring in red pandas and Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys for educational display and contribute to the conservation of these two precious species. Since 2015, we have collaborated with SFGB to organise the Sichuan Nature Conservation Week in Hong Kong. It allows local and international visitors to deepen their understanding of China’s rich ecology and admire Sichuan's magnificent natural landscapes and rich biodiversity.
