Ocean Park is saddened to announce the loss of a seven-year-old female Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin Milo, which was born in the Park in 2014 and lived in the Marine Mammal Breeding and Research Centre.
Milo was examined on the 14 April mid-day because of reduced appetite. Her examination and blood work however were unremarkable. She was given a preventative treatment, and appeared to be in reasonably good and stable condition by the end of the day. She died unexpectedly in the early hours of 15 April. A necropsy was conducted to investigate the cause of death. Preliminary findings point to a rapidly acute hemorrhagic enteritis, the cause of which is under investigation.
Currently, there are 21 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins residing at Ocean Park. The Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department was notified of the incident.
