Jelajahi Ocean Park.
Ocean Park extends heartfelt gratitude to all the passionate participants who joined Ocean Park's New Member Naming Challenge and poured their hearts into suggesting creative names for the Park’s newest member – a female crocodile discovered in Lin Fa Tei, Pat Heung. Now, it's your chance to make history! Prepare to cast your vote and be a part of an unforgettable journey as we determine the perfect name for her.
The public response has been extremely enthusiastic, with more than 11,000 entries received after a two-week long name suggestion period. In February, Ocean Park Seahorse Rangers, the largest student-oriented conservation group in Hong Kong, embarked on an inspiring quest. From this astounding pool of submissions, they helped handpick the top five names that capture the essence of the magnificent crocodile.
But the adventure isn't over yet! Brace yourself for a thrilling ride as you join us in this historic moment. From now until noon on Tuesday 12 March 2024, visit Ocean Park's official Facebook page and cast your vote for the ultimate name that will forever be intertwined with the legacy of this remarkable creature. The choices include:
Bo Bo (保保) bears a resemblance to the Cantonese term for "baby", which pairs harmoniously with another crocodile in Hong Kong named Pui Pui. The character “保” also serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting ecological balance. “Bo” carries the meaning of “be original”, reminding people to respect the original state of the ecosystem. It echoes the idea that introducing non-native species can pose a threat to local biodiversity.
Harmony (蓮融) The name Harmony captures the idea of peaceful coexistence between humans and animals. Additionally, lotus seed paste, a beloved traditional delicacy in Hong Kong, adds a touch of cultural significance that locals truly appreciate.
Hope (希希) Hope symbolises the ongoing support for animal conservation and optimism for the future of Hong Kong. It embodies the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, emphasising the significance of protecting the ecological environment. This adorable crocodile will serve as an animal conservation ambassador of Ocean Park, representing the conservation efforts for Hong Kong's unique ecological environment.
Lotus (糖蓮子) The Chinese name of the crocodile incorporates the character "蓮" (lotus) to pay homage to its discovery in the lotus field in Pat Heung. The English name, Lotus, carries the same meaningful essence. Additionally, to signify the joy that the crocodile's presence will bring to visitors and its role as an ambassador within Ocean Park, the character "糖" (candy) was added at the beginning of the Chinese name.
Passion (百香果) The crocodile was discovered in Pat Heung, a name that bears resemblance to the Cantonese term for passion fruit. This connection emphasises the energetic nature of the crocodile, captured by the word "Passion". Furthermore, “Passion” represents the Park’s dedication to ecological conservation upon the crocodile’s arrival. It also serves as a shortened form of “passion fruit”.
By participating in the final voting process, you automatically enter a lucky draw for an opportunity to experience the broad array of edutainment offerings at Ocean Park first-hand. Imagine the excitement of being one of the 20 lucky winners who will each receive two admission tickets to Ocean Park! The individual who proposed the name that receives the highest number of votes will win the grand prize worth over HK$12,000.
